Here are 7 possible items which will ensure an effective student-centred, personalised, higher-order-thinking lesson.

    1. Supportive classroom-peripheral learning happens in the classroom.

2.Personalized learning-pupils are given freedom to engage in learning at their own pace and creativity e.g hands on activities, visual aided activities.

    3. Cooperative learning-learning with friends and from friends e.g pair work or group works.

    4. ICT based learning– ICT is applied as a tool or attention seeker.

    5. Feedbacks– feedbacks are gathered from pupils’ participation in the classroom

    6. Assessment– diagnostic test, intervention test, formative test, oral test as well as portfolio.

    7. Meaningful lesson– lesson should be meaningful through all items above.

    ————————————————————————————————————————————————————-Responses for previous entries

1.Next:If you didn’t like group work, why did you not request to work alone? I would have given you the opportunity to do that.

Then everyone should do individually and only one lesson plan should be required so that there will be 72 lesson plans.hahaha

    2. ICT needs to pair well with pedagogy to allow students to learn better. But since you have already declared that it wont be happening in the next five or ten years (so to speak), you don’t have to apply any ICT in your real classroom.

    : ) *speechless

    3. There are a few in your class who are perfectionist, who were able to create this. You might want to learn from them.

I knew the fact much earlier.hahaha.Oh, how I look forward to be a perfectionist.

    4. I sincerely mean no offense.–I am not so sure from your “vocal” entry :)

I sincerely mean no offense. I sincerely mean no.

    ebook_who goes moo?

    1. I don’t remember I created an ebook before. So, I had none at my disposal. Therefore, I created a new one. That means there will be no comparison.

    2. This ebook is about:

    Title: Who Goes Moo?

    Theme: Animals

    Topic: Sounds of Animals

    Target: Year 1

You can have a look at sample shots below.

    the title “Who Goes Moo?”

Teacher reads the question and ask pupils to guess the animal.

    The answer is revealed.

Pupils are asked to make the sound.

    3. The similar pages follow for other animal. I have included lamb, rooster, dog, horse, duck and bee.

    4. This ebook can be used as a pre-reading activity. Teacher can initiate simple responses from pupils while reading this book. As extension to that activity, pupils can be asked to imitate the sounds of the animals.

    5. Language focus can be on vocabulary (animals). It is expandable to other animals.

Thank You, Xie Xie, Terima Kasih, Nandri, Muchos Gracias!

Below is the ppt file of the e_book.

i kinda like your title itself, “who goes moo?” I find it really interesting and i am pretty sure pupils would have fun learning the sounds of animals. Maybe the teacher can play the audio for the sound to make it more creative perhaps? good job mail! =)

I would agree with Sham, instead of showing the half picture of the animals for the pupils to guess, maybe you can have the varieties of guessing activity. You might play the sound then let them guess for few animals and the rest you might show the half picture of the animals. The guessing part of you E-book that makes this activity interactive, good job!

agree with shamy! what a catchy title! we can even adapt the content of your e-book by using different animals.use this moo moo as the guideline and then adapt it by using different animals. as simple as that rite! good job!

Hai Ismail, good job in editing your e book. I think your e book is very suitable to be used for the pre reading activity as it gives pupils a chance to learn the sounds of animals. Good job Ismail. 🙂

Hi Ismail..agree with the others..your e-book title seems to be interesting..however rather than showing half of the animals you could probably insert riddles for the pupils to guess the animals..in that way they are indirectly learning about other characteristics of the animal..btw..Good Job.. 🙂

Good job, your e-book is very simple but very interesting and clear as all the pictures and words used
are very suitable and clear. not crowded like mine.. hehe
Also, one suggestion for extended activity is you can make your students write sentences on verb of sound of animals. Eg: The dog barks. Just a simple suggestion.
      Overall, well done!

      hi ismail,

great e-book i would say. it’s different from any e-book i found so far. i’m sure students will like this to bits. by the way, agree with caryn, maybe you can consider asking the students to guess the sound first before simply tell it to them.

i think asking them to make the sound will create fun learning environment in class, they’ll like it very much. try it, i’ve tried once and my class was very chaotic, but i like it! 🙂

    Personalized Learning with Storybird

    1. I had a chance of exploring a new and exciting tool! Thanks to our instructor for finding this cool tool.  Storybird is so cool because I can create a quality storybook and more. As long as you are creative, you can manipulate it at its best.

    2. Here are some clips of how I went through.

First, I chose any art to start with.

    Then, I started creating story

Typing out the story after adding new page to the book

Finishing the story, save and publish the story for public view

The story is completed and can be viewed/read

    3. Here is the completed story entitled James May-Blunt Mars and His Beloved Pet.<—can click this link to read at storybird.com

    3. So, how do I personalized this tool? Here how I suggest.

    i) Pupils are shown the book that teacher have created.(this can be done by viewing the e-book on screen or the physical book)

ii)Pupils are told that they will be making their own storybook online.

iii)Pupils are taught about the functions, icons and other settings on the website–>storybird.com

iv) Pupils are given free theme and topics to be chosen but they have to make at least 4 pages excluding the cover.

    v) English is encouraged to be used and teacher won’t interrupt or correct grammar mistakes they make. Pupils are allowed to type and write at their own pace and at their best.

vi) Teacher is there just to give support and idea but not correcting and giving instructions.

vii) Pupils are allowed to create as many books as they want until they session finishes.

viii) Random published books are chosen and read by their friends.

Objectives: Pupils will be able to create an e-storybook(at least 4 pages) by using storybird.com

    Year:4 or 5

Conditions: Every pupil gets one computer each to work in the lab and the internet connection is superb.

You created this story? It is quite a sad story. A poodle to a ball. Yet I am so fascinated with the pictures 🙂 Good job, Ismail! Btw, regarding your lesson I like this part where “Teacher is there just to give support and idea…”. Teacher is only as facilitator and that is actually one of the key points in PL. Pupils are not bound with instructions and thus they can pour their creativity and imagination in the stories just the way they like it 🙂

      thanks for liking it..
      agree its a sad story..
      just simply created it..hahaha…
      really not suitable for kids..
but my aim was to give freedom and to let pupils’ imagination runs wild..
      no holds barred..

    Week of Millionnaire Games

    1. Week 8 was the week of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire games.  The task was how to adapt this popular game and makes it appropriate for kids.

    2. I’d like to do post mortem on the adaption that we made. This reflection will discuss on the strengths and weaknesses in our own designed game.

    3. The STRENGTHS:

    i) The visuals are colourful. Attract pupils’ attention. The influx of cartoon characters like Mickey Mouse would do good.

ii) The context of the award which was changed from money to candies could motivate pupils to participate.

iii) The questions were created accordingly as we began with easy questions and ended up with challenging questions.

    4. The WEAKNESSES are a plenty.

    i) There should be more questions as four sample questions were not adequate.

ii) There should also be few rounds where teachers should make the most of pupils to join the activity.

iii) Rewards were attractive but should be more practical like grades/stars or presents.

iv) The questions created should be more real and related to one another.

    5. All feedbacks that we gained were really helpful and useful. These feedbacks will be account for when we really come to terms with the situation where we could really apply this game in the classroom.

CAT AND DOG from NICKELODEON for English Lesson!

    1. Found this game quite interesting due to these reasons:

    i) It’s based on popular NICKELODEON cartoon- CAT AND DOG! Surely, most kids today have watched

this hilarious yet crazy cartoon. Thus, it probably will attract their interest as well as attention.

ii) It’s a simple game in which the instruction can be clearly understood.

iii) Next, this game encourages competitiveness as it rewards points.

    2. The activity would be this way:

    • Pupils will be divided into groups of 6.

-Each group will have two representatives who play on two different computers.

-There will be three rounds of playing which means every group member will play each round.

-The objective is to get maximum points and win!

    • Pupils are gathered and re-stressed on the three vegetables-spelling, drawing, labelling activities.

    3. Here are some screen shots of me trying out.

    (almost got it!)

    (yes!! I GOT IT!)

    (It’s OVER!)

    TOONDOO For Kids.

world’s fastest way to create cartoons
    1. This tool basically helps users to create simple cartoons in just few minutes. There are ready-made templates, characters, backgrounds and other related stuffs in the tool. Users can create comic strips, posters, still image and cartoon clips by using TOONDOO.
    create new toons
    select template
drag and select characters, backgrounds and insert text
complete it by entering the appropriate text
save the file and click to view ‘Go To Page”
    2. Limitations of the tool are a plenty. It takes quite some time to load the application. Templates are fixed so do the characters and backgrounds.
    3. This can be used during Mathematics, Science or English. This application can be utilized for making teacher-produced resources. Generally, pupils like comics thus teacher can generate their interest easily.
    4. The menu bar is very easy to access. The templates are suitable for young children. The users just have to drag and place it on the background before putting a life into that strip by typing the captions. Therefore, it makes TOONDOO the best tool for cartoon creation. So, in terms of friendliness I’d give 8/10!
    5. It suits best for TAHAP DUA pupils and above as they mostly already develop creative imagination as well as independent learners when exploring the tool on their own.
    6. Here’s what I managed to create.

    tee pack

    teepack-ed lesson.

    Year: 2 Ambitious (best class)

    Subject: English

Topic: (In The Garden-Parts of A Mango Tree)

Language Focus: Common Nouns (root, leaves, stem, fruits)

Let begins with the choice of:

    uno- Technological Knowledge

Obviously, the choice was Microsoft Power Point. It didn’t take too long to finish 5 slideshows.(yea..ONLY FIVE).

Clearly, PowerPoint wasn’t an attractive tool. They didn’t seem so enthusiastic. I knew it but I proceeded anyhow. So that showed the tool wasn’t really effective, but was just helping. Kids could simply spell the words and even guess what was coming next! It was no difference to physical flash cards. The only thing it was ‘flashed’ with the help of a computer and LCD.The only positive thing was the pictures were real (could’ve been printed on hard papers too, still real pictures anyway(=.=)L!

    des- Pedagogical Knowledge

Supposedly, PowerPoint was chosen as an effective tool to deliver the topic on Parts of a Plant. The approach was TLD means Teach, Listen and Do (an approach I created myself). It was a lame lesson in which pupils sat down in a big crowd and listened to every slideshow taught. Then, they did exercises! Undeniably, there were no physical response from pupils neither constructive learning. Simply because THEY WERE TAUGHT WHAT THEY ALREADY KNEW! and why was that???cos’ that was what in the textbook. So, why didn’t I make something?Perhaps enhanced the level of difficulty or created different types of exercise to cater their different learning style? The answer was I simply took things simple.

    tres- Content Knowledge

The chosen topic was not to be blamed. Actually, parts of a mango tree were very simple. Majority knows basic parts like stem, roots, leaves and fruits. It shouldn’t have been added with few new not-in-textbook parts like bark, branches and sticks. I sticked to the textbook and introduced them to mainly just that. One step at a time, maybe.

    quatr- Result

At the end of the lesson, those who previously failed to spell plural leaves manage to pull it off. Those who bragged about the easy the lesson was clearly had no problem. Lastly few who previously didn’t know what stem is had successfully recognized the four main parts: roots, stem, fruits and leaves.

One step at a time, huh?_lame excuse!

Honour your honesty Ismail! Nonetheless, taking your pupils for granted in such a way isnt helping anyone i guess? Imagine your own children being under such a teacher? :p

However, your thoughts of knowing something COULD be done is enough to ignite the hope for better lessons in the future. Nobody’s perfect, and under certain circumstances, i wont deny the fact that i’d do exactly what you did.

Well, what more can i say but good luck eh? 🙂

Okay. I am going to perceive from what was written.

Since that incident of knowing your students are good ones, have you done any changes in your approach / pedagogy?

Why at that particular time, the powerpoint so be not attractive to the students?

    • isaacismael87 1:31 pm on January 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

would’ve remained a BAD teacher if I didn’t do any change after that..
because I was about to be observed the week after. It wasn’t because of that though. Something needed to be changed anyway..I can’t be just teaching like that all the time..
lousy lesson taught a lot rather than so called good ones.
so, the approach after that and after every lesson after that was pupil-centred..
this is THE REAL NAKED TRUTH!
theyre good pupils.typical PPT slideshows aint help..
therefore, lessons after that were mainly they were singing, playing games, group activities and role plays and other fun activities.
those activities help.less IT used, but it helped.
PPT wasn’t attractive particularly because the slides weren’t prepared with details and animation and other attractive stuffs like sounds or background songs.
so, it wasn’t attractive FOR MOST OF THE TIME DURING THE LESSON.

    MY TOP 10 WISHLIST

As one of the policymakers, this is my proposal for creating an ICT-based education system for the country.

    10.  NetFET Scheme. NetFET stands for Netbook For Every Teacher

Every teacher is occupied with a netbook which is pre-programmed with national curriculum, school data, students’ information and other related information

    9. CYBERNET Project

Every school is provided with Wireless Local Network (WLAN), free WIFI as well as High Speed 4G Broadband especially for teachers’ use.

    8. Provision for ICT Subject

ICT subject will be introduced and modified to suit every level of school children and will be made a compulsory subject with assigned specified teachers together with the help of qualified assistants.

    7. Regional Sharing of Learning Resources (RSLR)

Every school in designated regions like Pusat Kegiatan Guru (PKG)/Pejabat Pelajaran Daerah (PPD) will share their resources with other members of the same region. These resources can be examination papers, results, data, activities and so on.

    6. Multi Purpose Media Room @ intelligent ROOM (iROOM)

This room stores ICT tools like TV set, DVD set, computer, LCD projector, 4-in-1 printer, mini studio for photoshoot and other necessary stuffs. Also, the room can be utilized as a drama/theater set as well as it will equip other electronics tools for audio and video editing. Basically, students can learn audio, photo and video editing in the room beside watching DVDs.

    5. NIC (New Integrated Classroom)

Classroom is given another name as NIC which will see major changes such as installation of LCD projector, peripherals such as SMARTBOARD, digital camera, amplifier, multifunction printer and mini wireless clip-on microphone and so on.

    4. COOLTV as Mainstream TV Channel

COOLTV replaces EDUTV in which will be broadcast as one of the mainstream channels that are available on national televisions. This is a FREE Government-funded channel that is available for 24 hours.

    3. Intelligent Tablet Scheme (iTablets)

Every student is entitled to this scheme where an intelligent tablet like iPAD/Motorola XOOM/CSL Spice is given as replacement for textbooks. These iTablets somehow will be paid back in loan basis where at the end of the schooling year, students will own the tablet.

    2. Greener School Initiative (GSI)

Schools will use minimal paper as every data is kept in online database. Also, textbooks are replaced with iTablets which are installed with national syllabus. Every homework is given out online and in form of games or applications.

    1. Virtual School Project (VIRTUALSCHOOL)

Every school will run virtually as everything is online. Exercises, examinations, tests, discipline records, evaluation, attendance records, health records and report cards will be online and systematic.

Therefore, I confirm that those proposed actions will soon take flight and I promise that it will materialize soon gradually.

    As promised by;

Wow! your wishes are wonderful! hehe…
I like your idea to name classroom with a different name – NIC (New Integrated Classroom)..
In fact, I think that is a brilliant idea so that we can see the difference between a normal classroom and NIC…
It’s amazing! Well, I hope all your ten wish list will come true soon. All the best! 🙂

whoah! really impressed with you, since you come up with sophisticated name for each program, looks like you really thinks thing thru. btw, i like the idea of having a regional sharing of learning resources. i guess it will work best since we will have the chances to share what we have with each other. and i think we learn best thru this way.

another one, greener school intiative is one of a kind! yeah! never thought that we can actually help to save the world by minimizing the usage of paper through the usage of ICT in school. however, i doubt whether can this still works if there’s any electricity short/ blackout. how would you tackle this kind of prob? or do you have any alternative ways to this problem?

        that’s a good question..
I’ve prepared answers prior to finishing the entry itself.huhu..
GSI means an initiative to utilize the usage of paper as minimum as possible ..
Still, core and important data should be prepared on stacks of papers too.
However, in terms of school works and teaching stuffs, surely there will be massive decrease of paper usage as everything is either online or saved as applications on iTablets which are only powered with Li-On batteries.
Moreover, this initiative encourages all schools to be competitive in minimizing the usage of paper thus being in the race to be crowned the GREENEST SCHOOL AWARD. This move will inspire every HM/Directors to be active in supporting GSI.

Hi ismail! Truly impressed with the way you listed your wishes…
Surely, if you are a headmaster of one of the school in the future,
I’m sure your school will definitely be very high-tech with all the ICT tools around
      without any limitaion…
I like GSI the most, it will help for a greener world and lead for a better future
for oyr future generation. Besides, we won’t have problem of having to buy papers, ink,
printers and on and on which is a waste of money! Haha…
ok, I think thats all…Great entry Mail!

I wish u good luck hoping that your ten wishes would come true one day..=)
I was impressed with the greener school initiative (GSI) programme which is very much aware of the current earth situation. We have problems such as global warming which is effecting the future generation as well.. Thus, we teachers should start the habits of saving papers from school so that pupils would learn to love and care for the mother nature. nice entry! had fun reading it =)
